Do You Have a Compelling Leadership Philsophy?

Five Essentials for a Compelling Leadership Philosophy

If there was ever a time when you need an elevator speech, it’s when you are on a morning TV show! When Tom Pearce and I were invited to talk about The Leadership Challenge on Trinidad’s “Morning Brew” with Hema Ramkissoon in 2018, my years of working with leadership set me up to answer the quick-firing question: “So, what can we do to become better leaders?”

My answer then, as it is now, is to create a leadership philosophy. This has been my advice to leaders since my early work with my mentor, Jo Bell, through my work now with colleagues like Tom Pearce.

I’ve built on that advice over the years by developing various tools for my clients, coaching and sometimes coaxing them through the process. The key is to create a philosophy of leadership that is compelling: one that energizes you – in whatever leadership capacity you are in – and those around you.

I’ve built on leaders’ experience and learnings and created my E-Book “Creating a Compelling Leadership Philosophy.” The book, launching this summer, outlines five essentials for the creation of a compelling Leadership Philosophy. These include:

1.      Start with a Blank Slate: no recycled slogans can inspire others as well as your own words.

2.      Reflect on Your Values: what matters to you is a starting point for your leadership.

3.      Write “I believe…” Statements: the heart of a leader can be found in “I believe.”

4.      Share, Articulate to Motivate: more easily motivate those around you.

5.      Lead with Your Guidepost: a Leadership Philosophy is your guidepost for how you lead.
